Zurich Financial Services has launched an addition to its web site (www.zurich.com.au) where parents can get financial information regarding children. A panel of experts answer questions on such topics as investing in a child’s education, pocket-money dilemmas, and teaching kids to become money-savvy. The cost of raising an infant to adulthood is at least $A150,000, so experts advise parents to start saving or investing early.
Passive smoking has been linked to deaths of 23 infants in Australia, principally via SIDS or so-called “cot death,” and the hospitalisation of 1428 more. Children exposed to tobacco smoke are twice as likely to suffer asthma and also have much higher rates of respiratory illnesses if exposed in the first 18 months of life.
It’s probably no surprise, but homework is one of the biggest sources of stress for students in families, according child psychologist Stephanie Hadley. For some families, homework is not a priority; as with other pressures, mere survival took precedence. Ms Hadley said homework was a major cause of depression among students, and according to other experts, uneccessary. Kids who do extremely well in school all report paying attention and working hard in class as the major contributor of their success.
French children as young as 11 are gaining a warped understanding of sex and sexuality through watching pornography, a survey has revealed. The report revealed that almost 90 per cent of teens had viewed porn, with most saying they watched it to learn about “sex.” A teen survey found that 43 per cent of its male respondents admitted to being unconcerned about contracting an STD or HIV/AIDS.
