Signs of the Times Australia / NZ edition — lifestyle, health, relationships, culture, spirituality, people — published since 1886

This month Dr Wright tells about the first signs of cancer in the bowel, gives natural remedies for arthritis and gives some simple tips for a healthier, happier household. He also gives some hints on dealing with some common personal maladies, as usual.

skin tissue issue
During winter, a person’s skin will often become dry and even irritated, but not in summer. That’s because colder air is usually lower in moisture, so it draws it from the upper skin layers. Humidity is often higher in summer, especially on the east coast of Australia and in New Zealand, so the symptoms ease. Apply moisturising creams in winter, avoid excessive showering, use a non-alkaline soap (Cetaphil, QV, Neutrogena or Dove) and dab rather rub your body dry with a soft towel.

when Sandman strikes
Any type of liquid “tears” eyedrop will help tired, dry and gritty eyes. Apply as often as necessary, from hourly up to once a day, or as required. Ideally, use the small individual “bubbles” that, when opened, can be used for a day—larger containers can become infected.

miracle cures work
I wanted to let you know that a friend diagnosed with pancreatic cancer was miraculously cured, I believe, as the result of prayer. And I’ve heard of an identical case from professors of surgery, who have witnessed a similar event. An “inexplicable” change in the immune response did a job that conventional medicine couldn’t.

must buster
If your wardrobe smells musty and mould is growing on your shoes, it’s time to air it out. Brush the mould from your shoes and leave them in the sun for several hours. The ozone will refresh them. Also, place a container of Closet Camel damp-absorber (available from supermarkets) in the cupboard. This consists of tiny white pebbles that suck out an amazing amount of water, the real culprit. You’ll be surprised at how much invisible water sits in the air.

orange light
Constipation that will not respond to laxatives means you must see your GP at once. If a digital examination proves “negative,” a colonoscopic check (direct viewing) is recommended. Constipation is often the first and only symptom of bowel cancer, which requires immediate diagnosis and treatment. If all is OK, try eating more fibre—especially psyllium (two teaspoons in water twice a day), fruit, vegetables, wholegrain bread, legumes (beans, peas, lentils)—drink more water and take more exercise, with walking and swimming heading the list.

garden remedy
Herbs have been used for centuries to bring relief to arthritis sufferers. Meadowsweet, feverfew and ginger are also well-known helpers, as is apple-cider vinegar. Ginger is also claimed to be an effective natural treatment and, while not a cure, it can be as effective as standard NSAID medication. Glucosamine is another such treatment. Aspirin, the standard treatment for a century, originally came from willow bark. Doctors prescribe Vioxx and Celebrex in pharmaceuticals. Find one that works for you, then stay with it.

repose response
A numb arm after sleeping is often due to pressure on the nerve in the neck, coming from the spinal cord. To avoid the problem, use a higher (or lower) pillow, or sleep on the opposite side, and this may relieve the symptom. For relief, try hot and cold packs or showers, musculoskeletal manipulation or physiotherapy may help. If persistent, an MRI will indicate if the disc is damaged, causing pressure on the nerve. This treatment can be dramatically effective. Microdiscectomy, a neurosurgical operation, may also bring relief.

no to power house

Q: I can buy a house cheaply, but it sits alongside an easement carrying high-voltage powerlines. Is this a good investment. Is it worth the risk?

A: No, no, no, it isn’t! The constant, unseen electrical fields that silently surround high-tension wires are a known health hazard, as many reports in medical journals regularly verify.
