Q: I went back to work after taking annual leave to find my supervisor had made decisions that affect me, without consultation. It means I have to work more hours and under worse conditions to produce the same result. My supervisor provides the link between myself and other authorities at work. Whenever I approach her to talk about the problem, she is arrogant and dismissive. I don’t feel heard at all. Short of quitting, what can I do?
A: Begin by making a written record of your complaint, concisely and in point form. Make sure each point is documented with evidence and/or supported by a good argument or an attestation. State your needs clearly and avoid emotional language. Ensure that you remain objective in your assessment of the new decisions, citing the benefits they may contain alongside any disadvantages.
Remember, dignity and reason usually prevail over anger and impulse.
Send this to your supervisor with a covering letter addressed to her as the representative of the administrative or executive authority to which she is responsible, asking that the issues you cite be addressed.
Assure her of your willingness to discuss the matters at her convenience, then give enough time for a response. Should you not hear from her within a reasonable time, send a copy of the document and letter on to the executive body itself.
If you get no satisfaction at all, you may choose to continue to work in your position where you feel powerless, but know there is no solution.
Or you may decide the issues are not worth the effort involved and give up on pursuing them. In this way you will invest your energies elsewhere and not in your job.
On the other hand you may quit your job altogether and look for a place where you feel more valued.
If you decide to stay and would like maximum job satisfaction as well, God can help you achieve it despite the difficulties.
Amazing things happen when we pray. Conditions change, people soften, decisions alter and yet everyone involved seems satisfied. I’ve seen it happen. Try it, and you will see God work for you too.
