Pop stars and footballers are less the heroes of young Italians than spiritual personalities, according to a survey. One-quarter of 12- to 24-year-old Italians surveyed said Mother Teresa was their role model. Pope John Paul II came in second, but third was terrorist Che Guevara, with 8 per cent, ahead of footballer Diego Maradonna with 5 per cent. A spokeswoman for Eurispes, who carried out the research, said: “Many people voted for Mother Teresa and the pope because they admired their courage, honesty and devotion to charity. These sort of qualities are what young people look for in a role model.”’

The picture of a US marine wearing a helmet riddled with bullets in Iraq has been revealed to be a fake. The photo had circled the globe along with a story of a miracle survival. Eric Walderman and his comrades fooled the media by pretending that he had narrowly escaped death, but in reality, his helmet had simply been lying on top of his pack when it was hit by fellow marines trying to shoot an unexploded anti-tank weapon. Eric, 28, then popped it on his head and posed for photographers travelling with 40 Commandos before they took Umm Qasr in southern Iraq. He gave no interview, but he and his colleagues did nothing to stop journalists jumping to conclusions.

A laughter club for adults is being set up by a Belgian woman who says, unlike children, adults don’t laugh enough. Catherine Rochigneux is planning on setting up the Laugh Club in Brussels, as she believes laughing makes people feel better. “The main reason for the club is to get rid of the daily stress by getting a good laugh,” she says. Scientists say that people laugh for only six minutes a day, compared with 18 minutes a century ago. Adults also laugh less often as they get older, on average only 10 to 15 times a day, compared with the 300 to 400 for children.
