The Star

Judy MacDonnell

The sun has gone, another day is done.
There’s peace upon the hills of Palestine.
Shepherds murmur on the heights.
Sheep crowd, seeking comfort in the darkness.

Suddenly—light, a shout!
What’s this, a song and trumpet on the
lonely mount?
A star-burst spreads throughout the night,
an angel in each prick of light.
The herders rush to hide among the rocks,
forgotten now their precious flocks.

Then a voice commanding cries:
"A child is born! The Saviour’s come."
The rough men thrill to witness prophecy fulfilled.
All disagreements done, this supersedes all else—
God sent His Son to live on Earth
as man should live,
and for our lives His life to give.

That star is gone but still it burns on and on.
Come, spread the news to those in misery
and hate.
Come, spread the news and celebrate!
