Michael Campbell: A Model of Success

Shortly after winning the 2005 US Open, New Zealand golfer Michael Campbell created unease among Maori educators with comments about laziness among his Maori people. To his credit, he was quick to point out that it was not only other Maori who were lazy, but that he had a tendency to laziness himself.

A World of Poverty

The tsunami and the hurricane received more media coverage than many of the ongoing tragedies in our world. A spectacular event is much easier for television news services to cover, but when examined closely even these disasters demonstrate their inordinate impact on those who are poorest. Yet the biggest impacts of poverty are often less visually dramatic.

Are We Alone?

For thousands of years, thinking men and women on Planet Earth have wondered if there are intelligent beings anywhere else in the universe. Do thinking, reasoning people capable of communicating exist out there somewhere? Modem science has yet to answer that question but one needn’t search space for the truth.

The Boardroom in the Bedroom

Have you ever been annoyed at your partner and wished he or she could act differently? If so, you should consider using negotiation skills in your relationship. When you do this, both of you can win.

Lesson From a Bush Bible

The tourists were happy in the safety of the cab, snapping photos, thinking Tossa had it under control, wondering when he would pull the tranquilliser, or reinforcements would come hurtling through the trees.

Dieting Pitfalls

For the dieter, there are many dietary hazards. To keep those kilos off, you have to conquer tempting restaurants, depression, relaxing vacations, and well-meaning family and friends—as well as the all-or-nothing mentality when it comes to losing weight.
It may not be easy, but it is worth it; once you defeat the four biggest diet dangers, you’ll boost the odds that your improved eating habits—a new lifestyle—will be a success.

Words in Context

In May 2005 with 23 keen, amateur archaeologists, I made an interesting discovery at Mareshah, in Israel, where we have been excavating for the past six years. In all my years of excavations, I’ve found a lot, but never an inscription. This year proved a bonanza; we found 18! It is from such ancient inscriptions that much of our knowledge of the ancient world is derived.

ADRA: Helping Your Local Community.

ADRA’s 27 op-shops are staffed by volunteers, where all funds raised are given to local community needs, such as rescue charities, women’s refuges or other ADRA national projects.

A Gift of Friendship

Prior to coming to Australia, Valentina’s only contact with religion had been through her mother, who joined the Russian Orthodox Church in the aftermath of communism and liberalisation that followed its demise. Valentina had many distressing personal experiences in Russia and was looking for a new life. Valentina met Jo Norton. She’d become ill and was referred to Jo for health care. In addition to healing, Jo also introduced Valentina to God.

Love and Obedience

Chicken or egg? What comes first? When it comes to living as God would have us, the question is much the same: love or obedience?

The Law of the Beggar

I too am a beggar! Where I live, begging is a way of life, a means of subsistence—even a livelihood. Poverty and riches, wealth and degradation co-exist in an amalgam we call society. At first I found it difficult to confront such widespread poverty.

A Mile in His Shoes

Just recently I attended an event focused toward helping the homeless. This might have turned out to be just another of those obligatory volunteer situations that I venture into and endure from time to time except for the testimony of two of the guest speakers. They were former “street people,” and their stories were not only touching but also inspiring. I came to realise that the homeless are first of all human.

Harping on Heaven

If heaven were a holiday spot, would it be as popular as Queensland’s Gold Coast. I think people would say, “Heaven? Yeah, we intend to go there sometime. But right now we’re saving up to go to Water World.”
