Signs of the Times
October 2006
Professor Ian Frazer
When Ian Frazer came from Scotland on a three-month working holiday to Australia, he never dreamed that the trip would change his life as well as the lives of millions of women around the world. For the past 20 years, he has been a man on a passionate mission, and his hard work and perseverance has paid off with the development of the world’s first vaccine to combat cervical cancer.
The Good Life
Popular culture today is centred on our own ambitions and success. The media explodes with messages suggesting what “stuff” should be most important to you. The stuff of this world is ever consuming, there is always the next hottest trend and fashion or the latest gadget to make our life easier and to keep up with the “Joneses.” Where have the qualities of selflessness, compassion and forgiveness gone?
Family Feuds: What Can You Do About Them?
Family feuds are not unusual. They happen in the best of families, even where most of the time members are kind and loving. Occasionally something triggers one or two of the members to rebel and frequently the entire family is affected.
Learning From the Bounty
Not many real-life maritime experiences are as dramatic as that involving William Bligh and the mutiny on board his transport ship Bounty in 1789. A little more than 200 years ago, Bligh embarked on a breadfruit expedition into the Pacific under the patronage of his friend and mentor, Sir Joseph Banks.
Six Ways to Supercharge Your Health
Every day the world of science releases new findings in the fields of food, fitness and fat loss. But how do we know which ones are most important and how do we choose priorities to help improve our health and quality of life.
What a Difference a Day Makes
Seen from a complete biblical perspective, the Sabbath becomes the most comprehensive and meaningful sacrament given to Christians to celebrate all Jesus has done for us to bring glory to His Father. In its wide sweep, the Sabbath illuminates the role of the Trinity in our origins, our redemption, our destiny and the meaning of life in between.
Seeing Red or Blue
In Australia—for reasons not entirely understood—many of us seem to have our own leanings toward either Holden or Ford cars. If someone within our family had a close affiliation with one or other manufacturer, that often tends to influence our loyalty in later life. Even though we ourselves (because of varying circumstances) may drive a different manufacturer’s model now, our deep-seated love of “Red or Blue” remains.
A Leap of Faith
Terror gripped me as I stood at the base of the 20-metre pole I was expected to climb. Thick at the bottom it narrowed to the peak where the diameter was less than the length of my foot. For an individual who has panic attacks at the thought of peeking out a second storey window, this was a big ask.
Growing Plants and People
Two years ago, Sarah* started a new job in New Plymouth, New Zealand. She started out very slow, would not talk to anyone and, at times, would disappear for hours. But her employers did not give up on her. Instead, they encouraged her and continued to teach her new skills.
Just Say No!
The world is full of advertisements. They’re on television and radio, in newspapers and magazines. Advertisements catch our attention as we follow a bus, as we wait at the traffic lights, as we enter a mall. Even the packaging of products is an advertisement, designed with you—and your wallet—in mind.
Mystery of the Flying Saucers
One bright summer day, Seattle businessman Kenneth Arnold flew his private plane near Mount Rainier, Washington. Looking out the window, he was amazed to see a group of nine saucer-shaped objects speeding through the air. When he reported it to the Eastern Oregonian, the news story called them “flying saucers.” Little did he realise that day, June 24, 1947, marked the beginning of an era of sky watching that continues into the 21st century.
I Could Be Mistaken
My mistakes remind me of airport security announcements—there are way too many of them, and every one is annoying. Like the morning I was stomping through the house complaining about the clutter.
