The Rise and Rise of Eddie McGuire
At age 41, McGuire is young to have achieved everything he has. He grew up in a lower socioeconomic suburb of Melbourne and has climbed the ladder of opportunity to be considered one of the most elite media personalities on Australian television.
Real-world Spirituality
What is spirituality? The question is easy to ask but difficult to answer. It can be easy to define doctrines and list beliefs. But to define spiritual experience—in a fact-based world—nears impossibility. How do you quantify and qualify an experience that by its very nature is intimate, personal and subjective?
Is Stress Making You Fat?
Guess what? It may be the frantic pace of your lifestyle that’s making those jeans so tight. Research shows stress can not only raise your blood pressure and increase your risk of having a heart attack, stroke or other disease, it can add to your waistline as well. You can wind up storing more fat around your middle due to chronic stress at work or home, and feeling tense or anxious can also lead to overeating in an attempt to distract yourself or feel better.
The Gender Genesis
Men and women, while both human, are certainly different. Genesis 1 and 2 have given us some important insight into these differences. It also shows how lasting relationships can be developed. God’s plan and desire is that the similarity and uniqueness of both genders be recognised and honoured.
Pride Goeth . . .
The desert warrior and his 600 loyal men rapidly made their way along the steep mountain slope. They knew in the valley, on the opposite side of its rugged peak, were 3000 of the king’s finest soldiers—hand-picked to catch their little rebel group. But the desert nomads, much like Middle-Eastern insurgents today, knew the mountains well and were intimately familiar with the elaborate cave systems that pockmarked the hills.
How to Get Kids to Listen
At one time or another, most parents have resorted to some form of these statements in attempts to motivate children to listen. Even though children seem to have a natural disinclination to listen, experts say there are ways to establish positive methods of communication with kids. Here are eight ways to help children become good listeners.
Attitude for Altitude
He’s one of New Zealand’s most sought-after inspirational speakers, and listed in the top six inspirational speakers in Australia. He’s a qualified surf lifeguard and champion swimmer, with a second-degree black belt in taekwando. He’s a speedway and racing-car champion, a gold medal–winning athlete at world level, and a qualified pilot. He’s a successful businessman, a husband and father of three. And he has no legs.
The Ultimate Life
In searching for ways to deepen our relationship with Christ, we can do no better than study the way He lived in the midst of an ungodly world. Holiness, to Christ, was not a monastic withdrawal from the world. Although there is a place for quietness and contemplation, Jesus encouraged Christians to permeate society as the salt of the earth.
Is The Sky Falling?
Reflecting on the string of catastrophic events we’ve experienced starting with 9/11, on to the Asian tsunami, hurricane Katrina, and the earthquake in Pakistan more recently, there is surely something amiss. How can so many disasters of such profound magnitude happen in such rapid succession? There must be a reason for this global chaos.
Life on the Line
For 16-year-old Rachel,* life in Malawi, Africa, was not about choice or opportunity. Rather, it has been one of survival and duty pressed on her by the circumstances of her birth and society.
Waiting for a Better Place
I was only four at the time, but the mind has an uncanny ability to remember things from a very young age. Dad packed all the clothes my sister and I possessed into a small suitcase and together we silently made the long drive to Grandma’s place. I was miserable. But not because of the vicious blizzard outside, rather more for the reason we were going to Grandma’s. Dad tried explaining it as best as he could. Mum just cried.
Maltese Obsession
Obsessions come in all shapes and intensities. They can vary from squandermania: an irrational desire to waste money; to islomania: described as having an intense interest in islands. When I was 11 years old I became obsessed with little white balls of fluff.
