Hugh Evans:
Making Poverty History
*
Online Bonus: Audio interview with Hugh Evans
He looks like a normal university student— young, well presented, laid back, confident with himself and the world around him. Yet if you look into his eyes and talk to him for a while, you can see that Hugh Evans is a man driven by his love for others and his passion to make a difference, to change the world one person at a time. As Young Australian of the Year in 2004, Evans is well on his way to achieving that goal.
Forgive Them
For most of us forgiveness is difficult. Revenge is our more natural response. Forgiveness has almost the inference of being a wimp. We seek compensation. We seek redress in a world gone mad with torts and legal challenges whenever something has upset our applecart— or when we think we can score some dollars!
The CREATION of a Better Life: Tips for living a balanced life.
The Bible begins with a grand introduction to the planet we live on. But the first two chapters of Genesis outline more than the beginning of a universe. They contain the basis for a healthy life and healthy relationships. Using the acronym CREATION, eight simple steps to a better life are found tucked into those two chapters, as well as the rest of Scripture. As Jesus said, “I have come that [you] may have life”.
Riding the Spirit
While we were all taught not to talk to strangers, it seems new acquaintances develop and conversations abound when we are stuck with those strangers for a long time. Lengthy travel in planes, trains, buses or boats serve as prime moments for these brief encounters. Something about the temporary nature and inevitable separation from each other—usually forever—allows people to lower their defences and reveal their heart and soul. Two such occasions in my life occurred on the Spirit of Tasmania, the ferry that connects Tasmania with mainland Australia.
Benefits of Cross Training
Cross training is a technique where you utilise a wide variety of activities and training methods to develop a broad base of fitness. Cross training can also make your training more enjoyable and improve your performance. It’s often used by professional athletes to prevent overuse injuries, instead of continually stressing the same muscles and joints.
A Life Well Lived
A t the age of 80 and 82 respectively, when most people are well into retirement, Peter and Joan Ruthven decided to start a new business.
Getting Control
We have a cat at home that is as sweet and friendly as any that ever was. As soon as you sit down, she will come up and rub her whiskers on you a few times and then curl up with her little “motor” running. If you’ve ever had a friendly feline, you know how nice it is.
John Huss: Bohemian Reformer
As recently as 1920, Huss was still making an impact on the Catholic church. A group of dissident priests formed the Czechoslovak Hussite Church promoting such reforms as use of the vernacular in the liturgy and voluntary clerical celibacy. Today all of us can learn from John Huss, the stalwart martyr who rated faithfulness to God above the demands of his earthly career, and even life itself.
Children Raising Children
Sarah (16) is the only person available to raise her younger sisters—aged 10, seven and six—as well as care for her elderly grandmother. As the head of her household, Sarah manages the family garden and fulfils household tasks. She says it is difficult to care for her entire family, especially since her grandmother is too weak to provide much help. Her sisters help her in the garden and around the home.
God, Marriage and Family
The most telling metaphors of spiritual realities for us are those relating to our human experience, especially those dealing with family life and marriage. When, for example, a mother holds her newborn baby in her arms for the first time and looks into the face of the one she has just delivered, God is shouting at her, “Can a mother forget the infant at her breast, walk away from the baby she bore? But even if mothers forget, I’d never forget you—never”
Does This Sound Good to You?
Certain words are pleasing to the ear. One of these words is free. That is why you hear the word free used so often in marketing. In fact, “free” is more popular than “no money down,” which sounds like it means the same thing—until the polite men come to take away your new furniture and your credit rating.
